Range/Habitat: Northwestern Africa to Southwestern Asia. Desert Species.
Sexing: Males tend to be brighter in color. Femoral pores present in males.
Size: Eygptian species reaches 28 inches. Most other sub-species reach 20 inches or under.
Husbandry: Needs a spacious cage. Recommended 40 gallon breeder tank for 1 male and 2 females. Males will fight. Sand or well drained substrate. Low humidity in the 40% or lower range. Very small or shallow water bowls. Primarily vegetarians but, will take insects. Small bird seed can also, be offered. The biggest mistake most keepers make is not giving them high enough temperatures. A wide spectrum UVB bulb that produces a basking spot of 115-120 degrees is helpful. Nightime temperatures can be dropped. Vitamin supplements helpful. Rock areas or hide boxes helpful.
Breeding: This species is an egg layer. Clutch size varies according to species/subspecies. Reduced photoperiod and hibernation or Brumation necessary for viable sperm in males.
